Non-fiction sources behind novel Silver Skies

Gab Share

These are the non-fiction sources that influenced the plot and characters as I created my novel Silver Skies. At the time I worshipped Dr. Peter Ruckman as a Bible scholar. I no longer worship him. However, though I have evolved somewhat in my political views since the 1990s and am no longer a staunch Conservative, I was such a good writer at the time, that the story resonates with Democrats, liberals and those not of my political persuasion. Though I was influenced by my Conservative church and those I admired, I was in tune with the deepest recesses of my heart and used strong intuition in creating the characters. Thus they were not cardboard characters and had goals and longings that applied to all of the human race. When a writer writes well, he/she can reach an audience that is not of her political/religious persuasion, because the characters are real and complex enough to seem viable to those different from the author’s political/religious views. In a sense, when a writer does their job, their characters become universal and transcend the author’s time and place, so that those of another time and place can read the story and relate to the character’s struggles.

My goal as I wrote Silver Skies was to produce a book written like a literary masterpiece with points of view not commonly associated with a masterpiece. It seemed to me that all the masterpieces were being written by liberals and I wanted to be a conservative who wrote a literary masterpiece, to add some variety and depth to the literary world.

These were my non-fiction sources as I aspired to write a book with points of view not commonly associated with a literary work. I bothered to list the sources, because I expected to get sued by the liberals, if I managed to get this book into publication. My book was a negative critique of the Clinton Administration. But I went out of my way to tell the story through the characters and not to preach, though certain sections of the book get really philosophical, which is okay. But I ruined the ending, by preaching at the end. I actually wrote the ending in 2005 when I forgot some of my fiction writing skills. Silver Skies is presently being reworked, to return it to what it was when I paid attention to craft. I wanted to write a book with conservative characters, who had longings like Colleen McCullough’s The Thornbirds. I thought this would make an interesting combination.

When I tacked on the ending in 2005, I became political and so the ending does not work. My new ending will be all scenes, dialogue and very little preaching.

THIS IS WHAT I RESEARCHED AND USED FOR SILVER SKIES:

1 thought on “Non-fiction sources behind novel Silver Skies

    • […] I tell many people, when they ask about my writings, that I’m a non-fiction writer who writes under the guise of fiction. That is exactly what Silver Skies is, a non-fiction book under the disguise of fiction. Though Silver Skies’s plot is fiction, many of the elements in the love story between Dor and Brianna reflect my relationship with Brent Spiner. All of Silver Skies’s sub-plots about government and religious powers are non-fiction, though names and places have been changed. To read Silver Skies as non-fiction, replace the name Dallas Federal Building with Oklahoma City Federal Building, replace the name Foreign Alliances Council with Council for Foreign Relations. A complete listing of non-fiction sources I used are HERE. […]
